UX-Ray

UX-Ray is a site scanner that automatically surfaces UX issues on your site and links them to the relevant Baymard guidelines.

Scans return a list of UX Insights, which are auto-rated UX guidelines prioritized by user impact as observed in Baymard's large-scale qualitative testing. The number of guidelines included in the scan depends on your plan level.

Scans include both desktop and mobile versions of the site by default.

Whether used on Baymard, in Figma, or in Chrome, UX-Ray rates guidelines with at least 95% accuracy compared to expert manual evaluation of the same guideline across dozens of test sites.

Running a scan

  1. Go to the UX-Ray tab.
  2. Click Scan New Site.
  3. Enter the URL of the site you want to scan and click Scan Site.
  4. Wait for the scan to finish.
You can close the tab while the scan runs. You'll get an email when results are ready.
  5. Click any UX Insight to view the issue, recommended fixes, and relevant implementation examples.

Scans are saved in your UX-Ray dashboard. Scans of the same URL are grouped together by default for ease of comparison.

Interpreting results

When your scan is ready, review the list of UX Insights and use the impact indicators to help prioritize which issues to address first.

Issues are ranked based on how severe and how frequent they were for users in Baymard's large-scale qualitative testing. Clicking an issue takes you to its related guideline for more detail on the UX issue and how to fix it.

Editing site industry

You can update the industry or industries (up to 3) associated with any scan to improve how UX-Ray classifies the site and prioritizes guidance. These changes apply to all scans of the same site.

To update site industry:

  1. Go to your scan.
  2. Click the pencil icon next to the Industry label in the scan header.
  3. Select up to 3 industries to associated with the scan.
Industries are limited to ones that are available on your plan.

Competitive scans

Competitive scans allow you to scan another site to compare alongside yours.

To add a competitor, start on any existing site scan and click Create Comparison. This allows you to add up to 4 additional sites to the comparison. You can add existing scans, new scans, or Baymard benchmark case studies to your comparison.

Accuracy

UX-Ray only includes guidelines that it rates with at least 95% accuracy compared to expert manual evaluation of the same guideline across dozens of test sites. See the related blog post for more details on how we assess accuracy for UX-Ray.

For best results:

  • Review flagged issues manually rather than relying solely on the automated list.
  • Add screenshots of representative pages yourself if the pages UX-Ray detected automatically don't reflect your site's typical content.
  • Verify flagged issues with your own testing before making major changes.
